Oslo, 28 April 2000. Norman, one of the world's leading companies within the field of data security, joins the recently launched REVS program of The WildList Organization International, the highly respected organization of the In The WildList. The REVS program has been initiated to provide anti-virus software vendors with samples of newly discovered viruses with a high infection possibility as soon as possible. REVS' technology is based on a secure server that will forward received samples to all companies joining REVS program. Norman has been helping in the initial set up of REVS.
"Norman joining this program will ensure us of getting samples of newly surfaced viruses even faster. This enables us to create detection for them at a much earlier stage and provide our users with even a higher degree of security" said Righard J. Zwienenberg, senior virus researcher of Norman. "The current pace of new viruses appearing is increasing, and getting the samples as soon as possible is getting more and more important to protect our users".
"It's crucial for the anti-virus industry to have a system that allows them to exchange samples with one another on a company-to-company basis. Previous sample exchanges have been either ad-hoc, or very dependent on individuals, or both -- REVS allows companies to perform critical sample exchange in a matter of minutes, in an easy-to-use, guaranteed secure, way. It is designed not to depend on one individual at each company -- such systems have obvious problems when that individual is on holiday, sick, or just busy." said Ian Whalley, Board Member for The WildList Organization International. "Having Norman on board during the testing phase proved very helpful indeed, yes. Norman helped greatly in testing the system, submitting samples on several occasions, and offering useful feedback."
The REVS server is running software that has been written specially for this program. The WildList Organization International is maintaining and managing this secure server. Samples received by the REVS-server are first decrypted and authenticated to be sure they are sent by one of the joining anti-virus software vendors. Before sending it to the participating companies, the samples are re-encrypted with each recipients encryption key.
