Oslo, 13 December 2000

The Data security Company Norman ASA is ready to introduce its next generation of virus control; Norman Virus Control 5. Development of the application has focused on two important issues: easy installation and administration in networks, and automatic online updating of all components.

Norman Virus Control 5 contains many improvements, which cut installation time and cost of ownership, improve efficiency and functionality and ease administration.

In this new version Norman has also improved the core of the product – the virus search engine – which has been licensed to a series of companies world-wide for use in their own applications. Norman Virus Control 5 introduces completely new search technology to meet the new trend in viruses. The application detects known and unknown viruses, including Trojans and worms.

Full modernisation

Steinar Wigtil, who is responsible for development of Norman Virus Control says that: “ For some time now Norman Virus Control has rated very highly in various product tests with respect to detecting and cleaning viruses, but there was room for a few improvements. We have carried out full modernisation both on the outside and inside of our application, which have been under development since 1989. Norman Virus Control 5 has a completely new user interface and uses Intranet and Internet as infrastructure for automatic updating and reporting. In addition to this, all communication is secured using encryption and verification.

Easier network administration

The system administrator can roll out Norman Virus Control easily and effectively on large networks and can choose the most relevant settings for each user or groups of users. An advanced message service can be set up so that the right persons are informed immediately in the event of a virus infection and can see immediately which machines this involves. This means that the system administrator can monitor the entire network effectively and can decide what action must be taken.

Automatic updating via Internet

Norman Virus Control 5 can make regular checks to see whether Norman has issued new virus definitions and if so will download these from Norman’s website or from other computers in the local network. Upgraded application modules or completely new modules are also downloaded and started automatically if the administrator so prefers. This ensures that the user is fully updated at any given time. Extensive modularization ensures however that the packages to be transferred are small and do not overload the lines.

Hope to increase market share

President and CEO Bjørn Fosli says that: ”Norman Virus Control 5 gives complete and very effective protection against known and unknown viruses and by simplifying operating routines we have also helped to cut cost of ownership. We strongly believe that our new generation of virus control will strengthen our position. We now stand well equipped to take a bigger slice of the market from our competitors both in Norway and abroad.
