PRESS RELEASE
Oslo, 19 June 2003

Norman ASA, a leader in the field of data security, announced today the release of its newest antivirus program Norman Virus Control version 5.6. This release includes an enhanced version of Norman’s patent pending technology Norman SandBox v2, made for detection of new, unknown viruses.

The Norman SandBox v2 operate by sending suspicious files to a virtual computer network inside the antivirus program, a «sandbox», monitoring the actions of the file in a simulated run. If virus behavior is detected, the Norman SandBox v2 performs the necessary actions to prevent damage from the virus.

Second generation, Norman SandBox v2 has vast improvements over the previous version. The simulation of networks and improved detection of advanced Win32 worms will help detecting unknown viruses and worms before anyone has described or analysed them, protecting customers at an earlier stage than ever before.

By running suspicious executables inside this simulation of networked computers, Norman Virus Control v5.6 provides a new proactive line of defence that does not only rely on traditional signature updates and trigger happy heuristics searching for fragments of known viral code. This ensures protection against new, unknown viruses, worms and other malicious code from entering customers system.

“We believe this technology will improve our customer’s security, and take them into a new era in the fight against malicious code", says Henning Hansen, President and CEO of Norman ASA. “There will never be an antivirus solution handling 100% of the virus problem. But we believe this is a huge step towards forward in fighting this serious problem, and we will continue to improve it".

“The latest version of Norman SandBox v2 solution can update and extend the virtual machines together with the virus definition updates, without requiring user intervention. This allows us to continuously maintain the highest level of virus protection for our users. Necessary changes to the equipment and configuration of the virtual machines will be distributed as very small incremental updates of the definition files. This makes it very easy and fast for us to adjust the Norman SandBox v2 and other key components in Norman Virus Control to a specific situation when it occurs", say Steinar Wigtil, Director of R&D.
