PRESS RELEASE
8 August 2005
Several proof of concept viruses have already been detected Microsoft's new command shell, MSH. Norman has detected 5 different viruses, but assures all users that there is no need to worry if you have sufficient and updated antivirus program.
The beta version of Microsoft Command Shell (MSH), which is the new command line interpreter in Microsoft Vista, was launched last week, and already virus authors have found a way to attack it. MSH is not part of Vista, but currently exists as a beta for both Windows XP and Vista. Norman has already detected five different proof of concept viruses, something that clearly demonstrates how easy it will be for any kind of malware to enter this new operating system.
- We are not surprised that virus authors have found a way to exploit MSH, and there will probably be several attacks targeting this system in the future. But there is no need for the users to worry, as long as they have proper antivirus programs installed on their computers, and as long as they make all necessary updates, says virus analyst Tom Bonner at Norman ASA.
An antivirus solution and a personal firewall will protect you from viruses and other malware.
Windows Vista is still under development and is not expected to be launched until 2006.
You can get a more detailed description of the detected viruses here.
