Press release
15 October 2007

Norman ASA, the creator of the Norman SandBox Analyzer product range, and the U.S.-based company Bit9, Inc., the leading provider of application and device control solutions, today announced a collaboration combining the Bit9 Knowledgebase and Norman SandBox Analyzer.

The collaboration enables the Bit9 Knowledgebase, the world's largest file hash database, as an additional information resource in Norman SandBox Analyzers. The Bit9 Knowledgebase is a the largest collection of actionable intelligence about the world’s software, including hash values (or "digital fingerprints") calculated for executable files that act as digital identifiers. This adds additional comprehensive file information to the Sandbox Analyzers, including product name, publisher, and authenticated degree of trust for commercial and open source software, shareware, and freeware.

The main target for this cooperation is to combat effectively the increasingly complex problem of malicious software. The combination of the SandBox Analyzers’ ability to process unknown data with the Bit9 solution solves the challenge of identifying both known and unknown executable files.

Norman Sandbox Analyzers provides invaluable insights into suspicious programs and potential malware, and the output is comprehensive information about the nature of these threats. The Bit9 Knowledgebase will enable and improve customers’ ability to quickly and efficiently investigate the content received at the premises. The in-depth sandbox analysis, in conjunction with the Bit9 information, will allow users to recognize and act upon known and unknown executables that possibly can be a threat to their information technology.

“The two products are perfect complements. By adding the element of known information to Norman’s ability to supply data on the unknown, Norman has dramatically increased Norman SandBox Analyzers’ value through faster analysis and better information quality,” said Mario Vuksan, Director of Knowledgebase Services at Bit9.

Norman SandBox Analyzer and the Bit9 plug-in are recommended to be used in an automated fashion and are easily integrated into existing reporting and management security systems. A graphic user interface provides efficient reports and information of the files being analyzed.

“We are pleased with the market acceptance we have achieved since the launch of the analyzer series in October 2007,” said Arvid Gomez, Vice President of OEM & Technology at Norman. “The integration with Bit9’s knowledgebase is a natural enhancement and the first in a series of valuable add-ons for customers using SandBox Analyzers.”
