(Fairfax, VA) - Norman Data Defense Systems, a specialist in the field of data security, announced today that Microsoft is now using Norman Virus Control v.5.6 with SandBox v.2 as part of its antivirus security policy. Norman’s antivirus software is used in Microsoft’s release labs to ensure that all software is free from viruses and worms before being released to end users.

"Microsoft’s decision to use Norman Virus Control in its release labs demonstrates that our virus detection technology is truly effective in detecting new viruses," stated Hank Dugan, Chief Executive Office, Norman Data Defense Systems, Inc., Norman’s North American subsidiary. "Our unique SandBox technology, a simulated computer component within our scanning engine, provides an extra layer of security so that network administrators can be more confident in system protection during that vulnerable time when a new virus is circulating and vendors are creating virus fixes."

Microsoft has been one of the key partners in the beta testing of Norman SandBox v2. This technology became available to Norman Virus Control customers earlier this year with the release of NVC 5.6. The SandBox includes a simulated computer, offering a first-of-its-kind capability to detect new, unknown viruses in real time without relying on virus definition files.

Norman’s SandBox technology makes it possible to catch viruses and worms before virus definition files have been released. The Norman SandBox technology represents a milestone in non-signature based detection of new, unknown viruses. This unique technology stops and quarantines malware based on its behavior even before any virus definition files are created for the specific threat.

The latest widespread worm detected and stopped by Norman Virus Control using SandBox technology was the worm W32/Swen.A. Other recent viruses and worms stopped in this manner include variants of Yaha, Blaster, Randex and Opaserv.

Norman Data Defense Systems will continue to support Microsoft with Norman Virus Control and will support all major operating systems delivered by Microsoft. Because of its commitment to Microsoft platforms, Norman is in the process of achieving Microsoft Gold Partner certification for Independent Software Vendors.
