NVCNet for ISPs to be Launched at ISPcon Convention, April 23-35

(Fairfax, VA) - Norman Data Defense Systems, a leader in the field of data security, released today a new anti-virus product designed to help Internet Service Providers catch viruses, worms and other malicious code before they infect subscriber networks and systems.

NVCNet for ISPs is flexible and scalable, but what makes the product unique in the marketplace is its ability to scan email traffic running on any operating system (e.g., Linux, UNIX, Intel, Alpha). Many ISPs operate in a multi-platform environment using their own in-house designed solutions. Up to this point, standard anti-virus software has been inadequate for these environments. Now, with NVCNet, virus scanning can be added to any kind of email system.

"ISPs which use NVCNet will now be able to offer virus free email as a new service to their subscribers," stated Hank Dugan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Norman Data Defense Systems, the North American subsidiary of Norman ASA. "NVCNet gives ISPs a competitive edge in this fast growing market by giving them the capability to protect their subscribers from malware attacks."

"No other AV product adds value to ISP services like NVCNet," added Dugan. "Combined with Norman’s desktop solution, Norman Virus Control, NVCNet provides another layer of protection for organizations whose employees use the Internet as a resource, as well as for home computer users."

NVCNet consists of two parts: a server application and a client application. The server application is a service that runs on an Intel-based Windows NT/2000 server, together with the Norman Scanner Engine. The client side of the solution consists of portable source code, a simple API for a file scanning utility, which resides on the ISP mail server with very low overhead. The utility will accept a file object and provide the necessary mechanisms to let the remote service perform a virus check of the file object, by interacting with the Norman Scanner Engine on the separate Windows NT/2000 server.

While most other AV software developers port their scanning engines in other environments, making them slower, NVCNet is different. NVCNet is unique because it enables Norman’s scanning engine to work in its native environment so it is fast and seamless, while the client part of the application resides on the mail server itself with very minimal overhead. The product also offers a single point of management. Engine and definition file upgrades are undertaken on the Windows NT/2000 server, and are transparent and automatically downloaded via Norman Internet Update with no user intervention.

Norman DDS will launch NVCNet for ISPs at the ISPcon convention, April 23-25, in Baltimore, MD. The developer of NVCNet, Kristian Bognaes of Norman ASA, will be available to meet with reporters. Norman’s booth number is 203.
