Who is this service for? The service is available to companies and organisations that have registered their own domain. The service can be used by anyone, regardless of the email solution or email server in use (Lotus Domino, Exchange, GroupWise etc.). As a customer, you do not need to make any technical changes. The only thing that needs to be changed is one pointer (the MX pointer). This is the pointer that allows your ISP to send email to the correct server. Instead of it pointing at your company’s email server, it needs to point to Norman’s email cleaner. What do we need to change in our installation? The only thing to change at your end is your email pointer (MX pointer which is managed by your ISP). This needs to be changed from pointing to your email server to point at the NOP email server. Norman takes care of this for you. You simply need to sign an “order/change" agreement which you get from your provider/partner. Norman will deal with all the technical configuration. Which operating systems are supported by the solution? The solution can be deployed with whichever operating system you use (UNIX, Linux, MAC OS or Windows). How does the service work? The filtering service consists of a server farm that performs two tasks: deleting viruses and filtering out spam from emails on their way into and out of the customer’s IT solutions. As a customer, you do not need to worry about updating or maintaining these systems; Norman’s experts take care of this. Does this solution replace our internal antivirus solution? This is an extra layer of security which stops viruses and other malicious code distributed by email - 98% of all viruses are sent by email. Files introduced into the customer’s network via channels other than the company’s email infrastructure (e.g. diskettes, CDs, downloads, users with their own web-based email accounts such as Hotmail and so on) will not be cleaned by this solution. I already have antivirus capabilities on my email server. Why do I need an extra layer of security? The solution checks email for both spam and viruses. Communications that take place internally within the company’s local network will not be scanned by NOP. The solution will also be monitored 24/7 by our experts for malicious code and will be updated continually. How and how often is the antivirus solution updated? The solution will be updated continually with the latest versions of the Norman SandBox technology and virus detection files, as well as the latest spam-prevention technology. How are viruses and spam directed at our email system dealt with? Virus-infected email will be deleted. Email detected as spam will be placed in quarantine. Each user will be sent a report by email showing what has been stopped and why. The quarantine area can be administrated by the users themselves. This includes options for restoring, deleting, and blacklisting and authorising (whitelisting) email addresses. Why can’t we just use our own internal antispam solution? Using an external solution saves the company the costs involved in overloading the network and makes it easier to scale internal email systems and the computers they run on. Over 70% of all email traffic is spam-related. Over half of this 70% is spam addressed to non-existent email addresses. Norman’s solution currently uses 14 different functions to check whether or not an email is spam. Spam authors are constantly looking for new techniques to get round antispam solutions. Norman’s solution is continually updated to stop these new techniques. How is the solution administrated from our end? When it is set up, Norman will have already optimised the solution for you as a customer. But the solution has a controlling administrator account which uses a web interface. Using this interface, you can set parameters for processing unsolicited email, and how often employees will receive their status reports and what these should contain. What is the cost of the solution? The solution is priced per active email address per month. Email addresses are calculated from the number of email users and the number of company aliases the company has. We use aliases in our email system; how are these priced? Personal aliases are counted as just a single account; ‘personal aliases’ here means the variants of one person’s individual mailbox (e.g. fnln@norman.com and firstname.lastname@norman.com). Company aliases which are NOT linked to an individual are counted as one account (e.g. support@norman.com, sales@norman.com, marketing@norman.com). The minimum price for the service is for 5 mailboxes. |
