Important!
If previously installed antivirus software or remnants of this still resides on your computer, make sure these are removed completely before installing Norman Internet Control (NIC). Two different antivirus products installed on the same computer will entail varying degrees of instability on your system.

1. To launch InstallShield Wizard and start installing NIC

1.1 Install from CD

a) Choose country (map)
b) Click Install
c) Choose Norman Internet Control 5.90
d) Click Install Norman Internet Control

1.2 Installing with install package downloaded off the Internet

Double click the downloaded installation package NIC590Rz_xxx.EXE to launch InstallShieldWizard. 

  • z denotes releasenumber and is a digit 
  • xxx denotes language version and is a three letter abbreviation

2. InstallShield Wizard informs you it is extracting the contents of the installation package

3. InstallShield Wizard welcomes you to the NIC installation program

Click Next to start installing NIC.

4. Read through the NIC information

Click Next

5. Read the license agreement

Click Yes

6. InstallShield Wizard is asking where to install NIC

Click Next to accept the standard location C:\Program Files\Norman (recommended)

7. The InstallShield Wizard now asks if you would like NIC to check for new updates every day

We recommend that NIC look for updates on a daily basis. If you leave this option selected in the dialogue box, you will be asked about your type of Internet connection.

8. Internet connection

Newer broadband/xDSL connection are usually categorized as Direct connection. Analog modem connection, ISDN and broadband connection using PPPoE are usually Dial-up connection.

9. The wizard lets you know it is ready to install NIC on you computer

10. Some short messages appear on your screen telling you NIC is installing, until finally telling you the installation is complete

11. A few seconds after clicking Finish, NIC will ask for a restart to complete the installation

12. Some time after installing and restarting NIC, the license wizard will appear asking you to submit your authentication key

If you already have a key, select I have a key where do I enter it. If you still haven’t registered for a key, select I do not have a key, how do I get one and you will be directed to our webpage for registration.

13. After restarting you are ready to commence with installing the firewall part of NIC; Norman Personal Firewall

Creating firewall rules with Freshie Assistant

1. The first thing you encounter after restarting to complete the NIC installation is Freshie Assistant

This is a guide that simply and effortlessly helps you set up some basic rules in the firewall part of NIC; Norman Personal Firewall.

If your web browser is Internet Explorer and your email client is Outlook or Outlook Express, you should click Auto Setup...

The assistant will then complete the basic firewall configuration automatically. The default password for the firewall administrator will be set to 1234.

If you run other browsers or email clients, or want to customize the basic firewall rules during installation, you should select Manual Setup...

If you have chosen Auto Setup your installation is now finished.

2. You are being asked to create an administrator password

3. Choose a password you will remember easily, but at the same time one that is hard guessed to strangers

A smart move is to use both letters and numbers. Enter your chosen password in the field Password, then again in the Re-type password field to verify that the password has been typed correctly. Click Finish

4. You are being asked to define your preferred security level

We recommend that the standard setting Medium be selected for common users. Click Next

6. The Freshie Assistant asks what environment best suits your needs

7. If you are to restrictive when choosing your preferred environment, you may experience problems later when connecting to the Internet, as well as E-mail

For common users we recommend the standard setting; I want to allow full access to all services and resources within my local network to be chosen. If you have previous experience configuring firewalls, and believe you will be able to create your firewall rules manually, feel free to choose one of the other environments.

8. Freshie is asking which is your preferred browser

Internet Explorer is suggested. If indeed Internet Explorer is your preferred browser when surfing the Internet, click Next. (If you are employing another browser, f.ex Opera, Mozilla, Netscape etc., click Select, then browse your way to the exe-file belonging to this browser.)

9. Freshie suggests allowing all outgoing connections

Like before, the recommendation for common users is the standard setting. Leave; Allow all outgoing connections from my browser checked, click Finish

10. This field needs to contain the adress for your e-mail client

If Outlook Express is the correct e-mail client , click Next. (If you employ another e-mail client, click Change, then browse your way to the exe-file belonging to this e-mail client.)

11. Freshie suggests permitting all incoming mail

Our recommendation for common users is still choosing the standard setting. In this case; Permit every incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP)

12. You are given the opportunity to define rules permitting all your favourite programs to connect to the Internet

If you do not know what exe-files correspond with your favourite programs, click Skip. (You will in any case get the opportunity to allow these programs Internet access when launching them.)

13. Freshie informs you that all tasks in Freshie’s Assistant course are completed

This means you have successfully completed your NIC installation.

P.S.:
Do not be discouraged by the number of questions presented by Freshie Assistant when connecting your computer to the Internet for the first time after installing NIC. Freshie will use the first week or two to acquaint itself with which programs should/should not have access to the Internet . This is normal, and temporary.

Important!
It is crucial that you update your installation of NIC continously, in order to be sufficiently protected against viruses/worms/trojans. We therefore recommend you to configure your NIC to check for updates each day. Follow the procedure below if you did not configure this as described in item 9 in the first part of this installation description.

  1. Click the N icon in the lower right corner of your display (by the clock), and select Configuration Editor
  2. Select the tab Internet
  3. If you are using ISDN or analog modem select Daily on dial-up.
  4. If you are using ADSL or other types of broadband connection select On direct connection at specified times.
  5. Save and Exit.
