Affected systems

Norman Virus Control and Norman Internet Control version 5.7 was replaced by version 5.8 in January 2005. The following information is only important for users that for some reason are still running version 5.7 or earlier.

To find out which version you are running, right click the N-icon. If you have an option named “About" you are running 5.7 or earlier. If you have an option named “Update status" you are running 5.8, and do not need to take any action.

Problem description

One of the main components in Norman Virus Control is Zanda. Zanda is among other things responsible for installing all new updates, including new virus definition files.

Due to an internal timer in Zanda, it will no longer install updates to NVC and NIC 5.6/5.7 installations after August 6 2005.

This will have no implications whatsoever for users that have regulary updated NVC/NIC, as they for several months have been running NVC/NIC 5.8.

We predict this issue to have the following implications:

  • Attempting to install NVC/NIC 5.7 will fail. The installation will never complete.
  • Attempting to update NVC/NIC 5.7 will fail. The updates will be downloaded, but not installed.

Solution for single users:

  • Double-click the clock in your system tray or select Date and Time from the Control panel in Windows
  • Revert the date to any date before 05 August 2005
  • Wait for the installation/update to complete. Restart the computer if the installation promts you to
  • Click the N system tray icon and select Internet Update to make sure that your installation is up-to-date
  • If updates are downloaded, wait a few minutes while they are installed and restart your computer if the installation prompts you to
  • Reset correct date settings

Alternative solution

If you for some reason cannot modify the date on your computer, download and install ZanUpdFix.exe and restart your computer when prompted to do so

Solution for network users:

NOTE WELL: Do not install this patch in networks running NVC 5.80 or later versions.

  1. Download and install Fix080805 on the NVC distribution server
  2. Distribute the patch to all NVC v 5.70 installations in the network using one of the methods outlined below:
    a) In networks using SelfXWiz for distribution --> Run the SelfXWiz installation package with parameter /ow
    b) In networks using NDesk for distribution --> Select affected computers in NDesk, right-click and choose Install Zanda. Select the "overwrite existing installation" option. and reinstall
    c) Download and install ZanUpdSilent.EXE on all computers in the network that are running NVC v5.70 (including the Distrib server), e.g. through the logon script. Deploying the patch using this method will require local administrator priveleges.

Restart the computer(s) when the installation instructs you to or as soon as the new Zanda.exe from 2005.08.08  is present in the ...\Norman\Nvc\Bin directory
