Problem
After upgrading to Norman Internet/Virus Control 5.90, the tray icons for Norman Virus Control (and/or Norman Personal Firewall) have disappeared from the taskbar.
Solution
The most probable reason for this is that you are running Ad-Watch (which is a part of Ad-Aware) or other registry monitoring software. In the upgrade process from NVC/NIC 5.82 to NVC/NIC 5.90 we need to change a key in Registry that is pointing to the Norman component Zlh.exe. If this Registry change is denied by Registry monitoring software, the tray icons will disappear.
The following steps explains the procedure for fixing this problem if you are running Ad-Watch:
- Start Ad-Watch. Make sure that the option Automatic in the bottom of the Ad-Watch Tools and Preferences view is disabled (it should have a red cross).
- Run the file c:\norman\nvc\bin\delnvc5.exe. Choose Repair. Wait a couple of minutes, and reboot your system.
- Ad-Watch will pop up and notify you that it has detected a registry change. It is important that you Accept the change.
- Reboot your system. The tray icons should no be visible in the taskbar.
In a few rare cases where the above has not solved the problem the following alternative procedure has proven succesful:
- Start Ad-Watch. Make sure that the option Automatic in the bottom of the Ad-Watch Tools and Preferences view is disabled (it should have a red cross).
- Choose Options|Blocking Options. Make sure that Lock start-up section is disabled (a red cross should be displayed).
- Run the file c:\norman\nvc\bin\delnvc5.exe. Choose Repair. Wait a couple of minutes, and reboot your system.
- Choose Start|Run. In the command window, type: c:\norman\npm\bin\zlh /load. The tray icons should now appear.
- If you still want Ad-Watch to block your startup section, enable it by reversing the action described under step 1-2. You will get an alert regarding a registry change. Accept the change.
