1. If you are running Windows Me, Windows XP or another operating system where Microsoft’s System Restore feature is enabled, you should disable System Restore
  2. Start your operating system in Safe mode before starting the cleanup procedure. All NVC supported Windows operating systems except Windows NT4 can be started in Safe mode.

To do this, tap the F8 key on your keyboard during startup, before Windows starts, and select Safe mode from the menu that appears.

Pressing the F8 key at just the right time may be a little difficult (after the firmware POST process completes, but before Windows displays graphical output). If the F8 method does not work, repeat the procedure, but press the F8 key more quickly, or press it several times.

On some (older) computers, the F8 key method may not work. On Windows 98, Me and XP you may also configure your computer to start in Safe mode through the System Configuration Utility (msconfig).
  3. Delete all Temporary Internet Files from your installation
    •  Windows Start menu --> Control Panel --> Internet Options OR Windows Start menu --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Internet Options
    • Select Delete files and tick “Delete all offline content"
    • Click OK
  4. Run a scan using the On-demand scanner
    • Windows Start menu -> Programs -> Norman Virus Control -> Scan harddisks
    • Click Clean when the scan is complete

      OR

Run a scan using the Command-line scanner (recommended)

    • Start a command prompt from Windows Start menu
    • Start NVCC.EXE from the ...\Norman\Nvc\Bin directory

      Example:
      Type cd\ and press Enter
Type cd norman\nvc\bin and press Enter
Type nvcc -ald -o -u -cl:2 and press Enter
  1. Restart your computer. If error messages or other problems indicate that the computer is still infected, we recommend that you search Norman’s virus descriptions or other trustworthy security sites to see if there are special actions that should be taken to remove the virus/malware in question.
