A more intelligent tray icon saves you the trouble of manually checking the state of the different components in the installation. Whenever there is something you should be aware of or act upon, the tray icon will display the relevant symbol with explanatory mouse-over hints.

Yellow triangle with exclamation mark	The On access scanner is not running	Right-click the N tray icon, select Configuration editor and make sure that On-access scanner is selected in the Component module below Norman Virus Control, on both the tabs Start and Install
	Scanner engine out of date	Right-click the N tray icon and select Internet Update. Make sure that your firewall doesn’t block the update client Niu.exe. If this fails, select Configuration Editor from the tray icon menu, go to the tab Internet and make sure that your configuration corresponds with your type of Internet connection -> Manual only if you update manually, Daily on dial-up if you update through a modem connection, or On direct connection at specified times if you update on a broadband/xDSL connection
	A computer restart is needed to complete an update	Restart your computer
Red circle with white cross	The installation is not behaving according to the configuration	You will most likely solve the problem by running Delnvc5, a program that resides within the folder ...\Norman\Nvc\Bin. Select Repair and wait a few minutes while the program manager refreshes your installation
Cog	The installation is being updated automatically in the background	You should not restart your computer or try to interact with the tray icon menu while this symbol is visible
