In the new Norman Virus Control 5.81, important features and functionality have been added to protect against the increasing threats posed by new and unknown viruses as well as more and more methods being used by threats to spread more rapidly and effective.

  • New version of the Internet Protection module (NIP) including support for Instant Messaging (incoming file transfers). This version supports common IM clients like MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger (also used in Exchange environments). NIP is also tested and should work well with Trillian. You can enable/disable the Instant Messaging option in the Configuration Editor if you select the Internet Protection module.

  • To strengthen the proactive protection of file shares, an option for scanning incoming traffic to shared resources is available in NVC v5.81.You can enable/disable this option in the Configuration Editor. Select the On-access scanner (Services and remote users) module and the tab Scanning to find the "New, unknown viruses using sandbox" option. By enabling the Sandbox, computers running NT-based operating systems like Windows 2000/ XP/2003 are better protected against e.g. new network worms. This option is not supported on Windows 9x/Me.

  • The On-access scanner drivers in this version are based on a later OSR kit than the previous version. The result is even more stable drivers in NVC 5.81 than in NVC v5.8

  • The On-access scanner filter driver update fixes a problem where exclude list entries are not honored if they exceed 50 characters.

  • When a "long name" path is added to the Exclude list configuration, the On-access scanner in this version will also honor the "short name" version.

    Example:
If you add C:\Documents and Settings\... to the exclude list, the short name path is C:\Docome~1\...

  • Internet Update client (NIU) update:
Sometimes the response to NIU is a web page. Unfortuntaley, some ISPs and routers are displaying web pages with ads or information initially when an installation is connected to the Internet. In such cases, earlier versions of NIU have failed without a retry. NIU will now retry when the initial response is a web page.

  • Impersonation fix in Norman Program Manager - Zanda.

  • In some cases where certain parameters were missing on quarantined files, the Utilities | Quarantine module could crash referring to an unexpected error. This is now fixed.

  • Improved handling of Sober-infected archives and improved detection in JAR archives.in the decompression library (NCL).
