As of NVC v5.81 incoming file transfers through MSN Messenger is scanned automatically by the Norman Internet Protection module.

The procedure for scanning File Transfers in e.g. Yahoo Messenger is similar even though the location of the virus scanning option (step 1-4) may vary.

Command line scanner

  1. Open your messenger window (the one with all your contacts). 
  2. Click Tools | Options
  3. Choose the sheet File Transfers (In earlier versions choose Messages
  4. Check "Scan files for viruses using
  5. Click Browse
  6. Find your Norman folder, normally on c:\norman 
  7. Open the folders Nvc and then Bin, and then choose nvcc.exe 
  8. Click Open
  9. After the last quote (") insert a space and the following:
    -cl:2 -c -cp -sb:1 
  10. Click OK

During incoming file transfers a command line scanner window will briefly pop up as an indication that the transfer is scanned. If viruses are found they will be cleaned and you may hear a beep from the computer.

On demand GUI scanner 

  1. Open your messenger window (the one with all your contacts). 
  2. Click Tools | Options
  3. Choose the sheet File Transfers (In earlier versions choose Messages
  4. Check "Scan files for viruses using" 
  5. Click Browse
  6. Find your Norman folder, normally on c:\norman 
  7. Open the folders Nvc and then Bin, and then choose Nvcod.exe

During incoming file transfers a scanner window will pop up. Click Scan to run through the scan. If infected files are found, you will be given an option to clean the infection.
