Industrial espionage is just as frequent during summertime as it is in other parts of the year. It can be done by unfaithful workers, former employees or external persons who want to steal or destroy information. A recent British survey shows that more than 30 % of British corporations have been exposed to some form of attack done by an internal or former internal person. It is not always easy to be protected from these intruders and regular tools like firewall, antivirus programs and ad-aware are not always sufficient.
Recently there was an episode of industrial espionage in a company that thought it hade taken all the necessary steps to stay secure. The problem however was that the malicious code was designed especially to spy on a given company and/or to perform a certain task. Faced with this situation, companies that have old (and outdated) equipment are doomed to lose. In order to be protected in these situations a company needs to have updated programs that are able to resist the actual malicious code.
The question then becomes: how can you actually protect your company from spies? The most important step to be done is that the IT administrators continuously control the system for potential threats. Recent research has shown that many corporations lack the necessary security rules and that only 8 % of all British companies have a plan for how to handle a major computer attack.
