The number of security incidents is rapidly increasing and a recent study actually shows that nearly 9 out of 10 organisations experienced security incidents in 2005. 20 % even indicated that that they have experienced 20 or more attacks. This alarming development causes heavy costs for corporations.

The study shows that the average cost to clean infected computers is about 265 dollars per user. Additionally there is employee downtime of two hours per incident, indicating that the cost of cleaning up after such an attack can easily run into ten thousands depending on the size of the company.

It is not just the threats in themselves that are dangerous; many of the users are putting confidential and sensitive information at high risk by not taking proper precautions. Security expert Dan Verton at Homeland Defense Journal states that there are two groups of individuals that you really need to worry about - the criminal-minded and the loyal, law-abiding employees who on a day-to-day basis are handing your sensitive information in a way that makes it vulnerable to inadvertent disclosure.
In other words teaching your employees about the risks and consequences of computer crime is of high importance.
