UK Gamer reviews Norman Virus Control (March 2006)

Jason Zarate, UK Gamer, summing up:

“Let’s face it; there are a load of Anti-Virus products on the market. It seems to me that the lot of them all do parts of what we end users would like to them to, and a few of them do everything we want them to do. Once you narrow down to that scope, then you have to sort out which ones are too bloated and intrusive, which ones are too "light" if you will, and which ones have the company, support, and services behind them to back them up.

It really is hard to argue with this compact, simple neat and organized product that Norman sent us for a review. It’s really easy to navigate once you work through it to find where things are. What’s more, you wont find lots of terms that need research for the common user to understand. What I also find attractive is the lack of intrusion into the operating system, the installer not plastering icons all over my desktop and quick launch bar, and the way it doesn’t bother you while in operation.

About the only things I find issue with are this; The GUI, while neat, compact, and distinctive, is a little lacklustre. But then again, unless your staring at the GUI for scenery’s sake, not many will care I think. Some may find the lack of a simple toolbar at the top bothersome, especially those who like to use the keyboard more then the mouse, but I don’t. The left hand pane serves as one. Unless I missed it, I didn’t see options for turning off the splash screen that greets you when the machine boots to the desktop, nor an option to disable, or remove the tray icon. The Splash screen can however, be disabled via a quick registry key edit. Lastly, I didn’t see any indication that emails were being scanned as my client was receiving or sending them. I’m sure it’s doing it; I just would like an indicator telling me so. There was a slowdown, in the time it takes to send and receive emails with attachments."
