Norman launches comprehensive solution to prevent data loss and use of unauthorized applications

Press release

Oslo, Norway – 2. November 2009 - Norman ASA, the leading innovator of proactive security solutions, today announced the launch of Norman Application and Device Control designed for organizations. This new solution provides endpoint security through the use of a proactive approach that enables only authorized applications to run and only authorized devices to connect to a server, terminal services server, thin client, laptop or desktop.

In today’s economy, balancing ease of doing business with endpoint security is a challenge. Endpoints are no longer bound to an office desk in a controlled environment. Employees install un-authorized and illegal applications on laptops and PCs which can cause increased support calls, performance issues and downtime. The information contained in customer data, corporate data and intellectual property is worth billions to some, and the costs for recovery of data and lost business are rapidly rising.

Norman Application and Device Control fully protect endpoints from malware and unknown threats while enforcing the use of authorized software. With Norman Application and Device Control businesses can centrally manage, monitor, and control applications and devices. By employing an application whitelisting approach, companies can ensure that only authorized applications are allowed to run on laptops, PCs, mission critical servers, and POS terminals, preventing the execution of unknown or malicious code. Device control enforces organization-wide usage policies for removable devices, removable media, and data. Using a whitelist and a default deny approach, administrators can centrally manage devices and data to assign permission for authorized removable devices and media to individual users or user groups.

With the power of Norman Device and Application Control enterprises can dramatically reduce risk due to data loss and the insider threat. This security solution delivers advanced data encryption while providing the enterprise with policy enforcement and auditing capabilities. Features such as the ability to encrypt all types of removable media, which covers CD/DVDs as well as USB memory sticks, offer comprehensive protection against data breaches. To maximize the control and security every bit of data written to portable media such as USB thumb drives and CD/DVD media can be “shadowed” in a back office server for auditing and compliance purposes.

“Monitoring sensitive proprietary information, especially when it is being moved is vital for effectively securing data and demonstrating compliance. Virtually all organizations have policies on what sort of sensitive data can be sent via email, but very few monitor what is written to or read from removable storage media such as USB-sticks” said Audun Lødemel, VP marketing and business development. “We are happy to provide our customers and partner’s a solution to these challenges. Today’s launch combines whitelisting and granular policy enforcement with critical data shadowing functionality to provide our customers with a powerful tool for control and preventing data leakage. ”
