Norman to deliver transparent antimalware gateway for collaboration servers

Interop, New York, NY. 17 November, 2009 - Norman ASA, the leading innovator of proactive security solutions, today announced the launch of Norman Network Protection for collaboration servers. This antimalware solution provides customers with best-of-breed malware protection for their SharePoint and other collaboration server deployments.

Norman Network Protection for collaboration servers is a security gateway to protect collaboration systems as SharePoint and other collaboration servers against malware. Documents sent and received by the collaboration server which include malicious content will be quarantined, and source address blocked by the gateway to hinder others to access the infected data.

Special care and attention needs to go into the choice of antivirus software for database based applications. Neither local antivirus nor purely signature-based antivirus scanners are considered ideal. Local antivirus software may be risky and can create discrepancy between the actual file system and the databases if files are quarantined at the file system level only. Also considering that local antivirus signature file are getting larger, and with multiple updates daily, will affect the performance on busy collaboration systems while scanning for malware.

“Norman Network Protection doesn’t affect the server performance because it’s installed at the front of the collaboration server farm. This makes our customers able to continue high performance network and server operations with complete transparency without any potential malicious infections or disrupted databases”, said Brian Beard VP Sales, Norman Data Defense Systems, Inc. Washington DC

The solution is independent of network topology and other networking units. It provides value from the second it is installed in the network. Norman Network Protection protects collaboration servers as Microsoft SharePoint and Alfresco systems against malware and includes a powerful management and reporting tool to provide efficient status and reports on the malware situation.

Norman Network Protection is a fully transparent malware gateway and can be installed easily at any point on the company network, such as the input and output of a database application. Proactive components like the behavior-based Norman SandBox® reduce the risk of infection from unknown malware. This simulates a computer, including its environment, in which unknown files are allowed to execute their commands unhindered. All activities of those files are monitored and evaluated and the file and path are disabled if necessary.

Norman SandBox® includes Norman DNA matching and Norman Exploit Detection features. Norman DNA Matching makes use of the fact that malware that is discovered is rarely entirely new. It compares the subroutines of unknown files with those of known malware families.

Norman Exploit Detection is a technology for detecting malware exploiting vulnerabilities in widely used document types like, OLE2 (Office documents), MDB (Access), WMF (Windows Media File), JPEG (pictures), RIFF (Windows media meta-format) and SWF (Flash).

Norman Network Protection scans those protocols that are susceptible to malware, including HTTP, CIFS/SMB, FTP, SMTP, POP3, RPC, TFTP and IRC in real-time. Documents are scanned during both upload and download.
