Every single day Norman Safeground adds detection for more than 100.000 new malicious programs. This ensures excellent protection for all Norman users, but there are some important things you should do to further limit the risk of getting infected, and to get rid of any infection that might have slipped through your defenses.
If you suspect your PC to be infected you should immediately run a manual virus scan.
The automatic scanner is running invisible in the background and will automatically and silently scan all files on your PC that are accessed (read from the harddisk or other media). This will prevent all known malware from infecting your PC/device. However, there will always be a small risk that malware we do not detect at the moment of infection will be able to infect your system. Such malware will usually be added to our detection database hours or days later. To detect and remove such malware it is recommended to run a scheduled scan from time to time.
Malware will often target known exploits in Windows components when attempting to infect your PC. Windows Update will notify you when new updates for your operating system is ready. It's very important that you install these updates as soon as possible.
Note: As of April 8, 2014, support and updates for Windows XP are no longer available. New, discovered exploits will thus not be patched. Norman will continue supporting this operating system for the forseeable future, but we will noe be able to keep it as safe as operating systems that are still supported by Microsoft. You shuld therefore consider upgrading to a more modern operating system.
Malware will often target known exploits in Java and other third party programs when attempting to infect your PC. If you see a notification from Java or other third party programs that a new update is available, please install these updates as soon as possible.
There is never a guarantee against getting infected, even if you follow the advice in this article. We are always here to assist you if you should be so unlucky to get malware onto your PC or other devices. Just contact your local Norman support department, and we will do our utmost to help you get rid of the infection.
