Fighting global crime on a global scale

2009-03-13 [Protection projects]

Introduction

We have previously discussed the fact that national police may not be sufficiently equipped to fight ecrime in its various forms. See for example our Fighting malware on two ends from November 2008, which described how private initiative helped stopping two types of large scale malicious activity. One of the problems with fighting today's ecrime by national means is that ecrime is not bound by national borders.

Impact

Nope - not the impact of this problem - rather the organization IMPACT - International Mulitlateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats.

IMPACT is set up to bring together governments, industry leaders and security experts to enhance the community's ability to fight ecrime on a global scale. IMPACT collaborates with The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), and thus provides the 191 member states in ITU access to IMPACT's expertise. IMPACT will also house ITU’s Global Cybersecurity Agenda.

The physical localization of the organization's headquarters is in Cyberjava, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

IMPACT has an International Advisory Board with well-known security organizations and names represented.

As a new entity, IMPACTs impact (irresistible!) remains to be seen. However, the initiative is needed and welcomed - hopefully it will play the role it aims to do. As ecrime is a global phenomenon, it must also be combated globally.

Further information

Read more about IMPACT on the organization's web site.
(For some totally weird reason that web site is set up by use of flash only, which seems to be a very strange strategy for a global security organization!)
