Eight (nine) critical updates for Microsoft systems in August 2010

In its security bulletin summary for August 2010 Microsoft has published eight updates for critical and six updates for important vulnerabilities in its operating systems / applications. In addition to this is the out-of-band critical update published 2 August.

Critical is Microsoft's highest vulnerability rating.

The critical updates address the following issues:

  • One publicly disclosed vulnerability in Windows Shell (update from 2 August)
  • One publicly disclosed vulnerability and one privately reported vulnerability in the Secure Channel (SChannel) security package in Windows.
  • One privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft XML Core Services.
  • One privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft MPEG Layer-3 audio codecs.
  • Six privately reported vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer.
  • Several privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows.
  • One privately reported vulnerability in Cinepak Codec.
  • Four privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office.
  • Two privately reported vulnerabilities in Microsoft .NET Framework and Microsoft Silverlight.

Updates that fixes the vulnerabilities are available from Windows automatic update mechanism for systems that support this. Alternatively, one may download updates from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

Norman advices all affected users to download the relevant security updates as soon as possible, to be protected from potential exploits.
