Problem description

How do I distribute Norman Virus Control from a mapped netwrok drive?

Problem solution

NVC version 5.30 or later supports distribution with mapped network drives as distribution source. You may use x:\Norman\Distrib\... instead of \\Server\Share\Norman\Distrib\... in the LAN/WAN tab of the Default.ndf configuration file. This means that you can use the same configuration file for several servers. However, you must use UNC path in the Distribution source field in NDesk if this is your choice of distribution tool. SelfxWiz will support mapped network drives.

Note: We recommend this solution for distribution to Windows 95/98/Me workstations only! Distributing from mapped network drives in NT4/2000/XP environments will actually be a security risk. When users log off, their computers will be disconnected from all network drives, disabling the possibility of automatic updates using the distribution agent.

Example - NVC distribution from a mapped network drive on a Windows NT4/2000 server:

Type the drive letter in the field for Distribution server name like this:

To be able to display the user-defined paths, you must add a dot (.) in the field Share name (Windows) / Volume name and root directory (Novell). If you check the User-defined paths option and click Settings, you will see that the rest of the path is automatically filled in for you:

As you can see, the paths are looking a little different than what you are probably used to; e.g. what is usually x:\Distrib\Download is now x:\. \Distrib\Download.
