How do I successfullly remove viruses/malware with Norman's antivirus software?

1. The first thing you should do is to disable System Restore and delete the Temporary Internet Files

This will remove quite a few malicious files and speed up scanning time.

Deleting Temporary Internet Files:

This will depend on what type of Web Browser you are using. The following method is for Internet Explorer 7:

1. Go to Windows Start menu --> (Settings -->) Control Panel --> Internet Options.
2. Click Delete.
3. Click Delete files and confirm by clicking Yes.
4. Wait while the files are being removed.
5. Click Close and then click OK.

Disabling System Restore:

1. Right-click My Computer (either on the start menu or the desktop)
2. Select Properties.
3. Select the System Restore tab.
4. Check Turn off System Restore.
5. Click Apply and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.

System Restore should be turned back on after the computer has been successfully cleaned for malware/viruses. Do this by repeating steps 1-3 and then uncheck the Turn off System Restore box. Then click OK and restart the computer.

2. Make sure that your Norman software is up to date

Right click the Norman icon and choose Internet Update.

A download will start if there is an available update, wait for the download to finish. Then wait another five minutes to make sure the update is installed properly.

3. Start a manual scan of the computer

• Right-click the Norman icon and select Scan Computer. (Norman Security Suite / Norman Antivirus & Antispyware)
• Right-click the Norman icon and select Scan hard disks. (Norman Virus Control)

The scan will take some time depending on your computer. 30-60 minutes is not uncommon. If you are using Norman Virus Control, you might have to click Clean when the scan is complete.

4. Reboot the computer

Some malicious files can only be removed by rebooting the computer.

5. If the computer is still infected after the reboot, you should try to scan with Norman Malware Cleaner.

Norman Malware Cleaner can be downloaded from the first link below. For best result, Norman Malware Cleaner should be run in safe mode.

Starting the computer in safe mode:

1. Make sure the computer is turned off.
2. Turn on the computer and start tapping the F8 key.
   Note: Some computers may have a BIOS option that responds to the F8 key, if this is the case you will notice that you end up in the wrong menu, try to press F8 later in the boot process, right before Windows starts).
3. A text menu should appear, this menu allows you to start Windows in alternative ways. If Windows starts as normal, go back and repeat step 1 and 2 until you get the timing right.
4. Select "Safe mode" in the menu, using the arrow keys, and press the enter key.
   If you need Internet access you should instead choose Safe mode with Networking.
5. Press enter again if you are prompted to select operating system.
6. Log in to Windows by selecting a user. The user should have administrative privileges.
7. Click Yes when asked to proceed to safe mode.

When Norman Malware Cleaner is finished, reboot the computer.

If the computer is still infected, you should contact your local support department. The computer is most likely infected with new and unknown malware/viruses.  The Norman software will need an update to detect and remove these. You might be asked to run some of our forensic tools so that we can discover these unknown files.

Another option is to use other antimalware tools. One such tool that has proven quite effective against the most common threats is Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. This tool is freeware and download links can be found at Malwarebytes' webpage (the links opens a separate browser window). Please note that such tools must be used at own risk. Norman does not support such tools.
