I get the error message "Cannot connect to product server" - how do I solve this?

Problem description

When running Internet Update (NIU) the following error message occurs

Internet Update:
Cannot connect to product server: 
'servername'

WinSock error 10022 WSAEINVAL
An invalid argument was supplied

Problem solution

A firewall is probably limiting NIU.EXE’s (the Internet Update client) access to the Internet. Make sure that NIU.EXE has outgoing http access on port 80 to all addresses.
