The scanner engine is not up to date. What does this mean and what should I do?

Problem description
There is a blinking, yellow exclamation mark or a red bullet with a white X over the N tray icon.
The mouseover text reads "The scanner engine is not up to date".
Problem solution
This indicates that it is more than 8 days since Norman Virus Control was updated.
Click the N tray icon and select Internet Update to update NVC.
To ensure proper protection against the latest threats it is imperative that you keep your virus control up-to-date. To check when your virus control was last updated, click the N icon, choose Update status and check the last updated date under Norman Scanner Engine. If your virus control is up-to-date and you still experience this problem, please verify that the system date on your computer is correct and that the update configuration is correctly configured (Configuration Editor -> Install and update products -> Internet).
